I recently returned from my high school reunion, my first since graduating, and it was like stepping into a time capsule. Imagine a group of teens from the 1980s stepping into to a time portal and finding themselves in their fifties. The experience was surreal, filled with familiar faces and echoes of the past.

Let me set the stage: in high school, I was labeled "The Brain." While I wasn't necessarily the smartest in the class even by conventional standards, somehow the label stuck, and it came with its own set of pros and cons—on one hand, it set high expectations, but on the other, it often kept me boxed into a narrow definition of who I was. Despite graduating early and heading to an Ivy League university, my real journey was just beginning: discovering who I truly was beyond those labels. Over time, I explored various paths—screenwriting, corporate leadership, activism, and eventually coaching. Each step helped me peel back the layers of my identity, leading me to a place of genuine self-acceptance. Each step helped me peel back the layers of my identity, leading me to a place of genuine self-acceptance.

At the reunion, I found myself reconnecting with old classmates, some who had evolved in beautiful ways, others who were still rooted in high school dynamics. I reconnected with the vulnerability I felt in my teenage years—the discomfort of being misunderstood or not seen. But I also realized how much I’ve grown. In moments of authentic connection, like listening to a former classmate openly share their journey through addiction and recovery, or another candidly speaking about being in the midst of a divorce instead of hiding behind a polished mask, I truly felt the power of embracing our shared humanity. And in the moments where I felt excluded or brushed aside, I remembered the importance of self-compassion and the resilience I’ve developed over the years.
Reflecting on these experiences, I found myself grateful for the lessons self-coaching and working with a coach has taught me: the courage to be vulnerable, the strength to embrace discomfort, and the wisdom to look beyond surface-level interactions to seek deeper, more meaningful connections. These insights have shaped my approach as a coach, and they’re the foundation of how I guide others to explore their own paths to success and fulfillment.

The biggest takeaway for me was the realization that our search for meaning and success isn’t about reaching some ultimate destination; it’s about staying present, staying open, and finding those moments of authentic connection—whether they come from expected or surprising places. I learned that true growth happens when we lean into our discomfort, reflect on our experiences, and use those reflections to fuel our transformation.
